September 24, 2004 – ATLANTA – The Morehouse golf team pulled off a stunning upset against top-notch teams to win the Black College Hall of Fame Division II Golf Tournament, played Thursday and Friday at the Sugar Creek Golf Course in Decatur.
The first win of the 2004-2005 season was also the Morehouse team’s most impressive showing since golf was re-introduced as an intercollegiate sport at the College in 2002. Morehouse, Benedict, Kentucky State, Lane and Lemoyne Owen are the only schools in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that field golf teams.
After the first day of competition, Morehouse trailed Fayetteville State University by a single stroke, 304-303. But on the second day, Jordan Heath and Steven Wooten lowered their previous-day’s scores by three strokes each to help the Maroon Tigers (604) squeeze out a narrow victory over Fayetteville State (605) and Benedict (624). St. Augustine (717) and J.C. Smith (767) rounded out the scoring.
Benedict and St. Augustine colleges and Fayetteville State and Johnson C. Smith universities competed in the Division II tournament. In the Division 1-AA field Florida A&M (587), beat out Texas Southern (590), Grambling (625) and Hampton (631).
The tournament format allowed each school to send five players on to the 18-hole course, with the lowest four scores being tabulated.
Morehouse is coached by teaching professional William Lewis, one of Georgia’s most respected and celebrated African American golf teachers and players.
