TIGERS BATTERED BY RAMS

October 31, 2009 – ALBANY, GA – With starting quarterback William Brack and backup quarterback DaJuan Thigpen both injured, Morehouse had little chance against the SIAC’s number one defense, and the Maroon Tigers fell to Albany State 30-12.

Despite a valiant effort by emergency quarterback David Hart, the Maroon Tigers could produce only one touchdown and two field goals against the Golden Rams, who jumped out to a 17-0 lead, on scoring drives of 41, 66 and 77 yards.

Hart, normally a wide receiver and placekick holder, completed 11-of-25 passes, for 135 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked seven times and intercepted three times. Brack limped onto the field to attempt one pass in the second quarter, but the pass missed its mark.

The Maroon Tigers gained 94 yards on the ground – 49 by David Carter and 36 by Hart.

Six Morehouse receivers caught 11 passes for 135 yards, with Achille Hendje (3-42), Robert Darby-McNair (2-40) and Jamar Rodriguez (2-21) getting the lion’s share. Hendje’s 13-yard scoring reception from Hart was the lone Morehouse touchdown. The 79-yard scoring drive cut the ASU lead to 17-12, with six minutes left in the third quarter. But the SIAC’s number one scoring team scored 13 unanswered points, to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Ian Mullen kicked second-quarter field goals of 26 and 52 yards.

Linebacker Charlie Wilson led all tacklers with 13 tackles. Brandon Houston contributed nine tackles.

Mullen and Wilson were cited for Honorable Mention in the SIAC Player of the Week balloting.

Albany State, which improved to 8-1 (7-1 SIAC), avenged the 24-19 defeat at the hands of the Maroon Tigers at the 2008 Morehouse Homecoming.

Morehouse (6-3, 5-3 SIAC) dropped to fourth place in the SIAC, behind Tuskegee, Albany and Benedict.

The Maroon Tigers will finish the season at home, against Miles, Saturday at 1 p.m.
