October 19, 2009 – ATLANTA – Morehouse’s Charlie Wilson was the best defender in the SIAC this week, according to conference officials who voted him the Defensive Player of the Week. David Carter was equally outstanding, but had to share the Newcomer of the Week award with another SIAC player.
Wilson, a 5’-10” 205-pound linebacker from Montgomery, AL, wreaked havoc in the Lane backfield, collecting three sacks and 12 tackles. He also recovered a fumble for a touchdown. This is the fourth time on the SIAC Honor Roll this season for Wilson who leads the conference in sacks.
Carter, a 5’-10” 215-pound freshman running back from Marietta, GA, rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns, for his best performance of the season. Carter rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown, on opening day against Benedict. He has been named co-Newcomer of the Week three times.
Wide receiver Achille Hendje, placekicker/punter Ian Mullen and offensive lineman Joseph Williams received Honorable Mention for their performances in the 35-33 come-from-behind win over Lane College.
Hendje caught 7 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Most of his yardage came in the fourth quarter and helped fuel the late rally. Hendje is second in the SIAC in receptions per game and receiving yardage per game.
Mullen punted five times for a 34.2-yard average. Three of his punts pinned the Dragons inside their 20-yard line. He hit 5-of-5 extra points and rushed for 17 yards on a fake punt to sustain a key drive. Mullen leads the SIAC in punting average, field goals, scoring by kick and PAT percentage. He is third overall in scoring.
Williams anchored a Morehouse line that scored 3 TDs and amassed 392 yards of offense. Williams and his offensive line teammates played inspired football in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Often overlooked and overshadowed, this is the first time this season for Williams on the SIAC Honor Roll.
