September 5, 2009 – ATLANTA – The Maroon Tiger fell 36-13, to the Fort Valley State Wildcats, evening both teams’ records to 1-1 (1-1 SIAC).
The penalty-filled, defensive battle was close until the fourth quarter, when the Wildcats scored 21 unanswered points to put the game out of reach. The teams combined for 29 penalties and 268 lost yards.
One of the high spots for Morehouse was a 53-yard field goal by placekicker Ian Mullen, which was one of the longest field goals in Morehouse football history. The boot came at the end of the second quarter, with no time showing on the clock and was made possible by a roughing the passer penalty against quarterback William Brack, as time expired.
Unlike last week’s 34-point scoring barrage, Morehouse failed to get any offensive rhythm. Brack completed 19-of-35 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked five times and intercepted twice.
Brack’s 199 yards were spread out among seven receivers. Achille Hendje hauled in seven passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. Robert Darby-McNair and David Hart had identical stats – each catching three passes for 30 yards.
Six Morehouse rushers gained only 60 yards on the ground, compared to 276 yards rushing last week against Benedict. Christian Green, playing in his first game this season, got the lion’s share of the yardage, with 33 yards on six carries.
As they did last week, Charlie Wilson and Olajawaun Gooch led the Morehouse defense, with eight tackles each.
Fort Valley quarterback Nathaniel Samas passed for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
The Maroon Tigers will travel to Louisville, KY next week to face the Kentucky State Thorobreds. Fort Valley will do battle with Tuskegee at home.
