SIX MAROON TIGERS VOTED TO ALL-SIAC TEAM

November 19, 2008 – ATLANTA – Six Morehouse football players earned their way onto the 2008 All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team announced today.

Jeffrey Cargile, Ramon Harewood, Jamar Rodriguez, James Steadman and Earl Thomas earned spots on the 1st Team and Derrick Scott got the nod for the 2nd team.

Morehouse placed more players on the first team than any other school in the conference.

This is the second time on the All-SIAC list for Cargile, a senior linebacker from Cincinnati, OH, who was voted the SIAC’s 2008 Defensive Player of the Year. Cargile, who was named to the Lindy’s Football Magazine preseason All-America team, led the SIAC in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss.

Harewood, a 6’-7” 320-pound offensive lineman from Christ Church, Barbabos, anchored a solid Morehouse line and was twice named as Honorable Mention for Player of the Week, in 2008.

Rodriguez, a wide receiver and kick return specialist from Houston, TX, led the SIAC in All-Purpose yardage, with an average of 131.8 yards per game, and in Kick Return Avg., with 27.8 yards per return. The 5’-8” 160-pound speedster was voted Player of the Week twice and was named to the Honorable Mention roll twice this season.

Steadman, a 6’-4” 215-pound receiver from Savannah, GA, was the SIAC’s fifth-leading pass-catcher in reception yardage per game (66.2) and receptions per game (4.1). He hauled in six touchdown passes in 2008.

Earl “The Tiger” Thomas placed second on the Morehouse list and fifth on the SIAC list of best tacklers, with 80 tackles. The senior linebacker from Houston, TX was a team captain and was designated as Honorable Mention for Player of the Week honors for his season-high 17 tackles against Albany State.

Scott, a 6’-1” 205-pound senior from Bronwood, GA, was one of the SIAC’s best pass defenders. He was Morehouse’s fourth best tackler and led all Maroon Tigers in interceptions, with four.

Morehouse finished second in the SIAC, with a record of 6-4 (6-3 SIAC). It was the highest conference finish for the Maroon Tigers since 2001.
