November 6, 2007 – ATLANTA – Morehouse linebacker Jeffrey Cargile was named the D2football.com national Defensive Player of the Week, for his outstanding performance against Miles College on Saturday.
D2football.com is an online sports reporting web site that focuses on the NCAA Division II.
Cargile, a 5’-9” 190-lb junior from Cincinnati, spent almost half his time in the Miles backfield. He recorded a career-high 13 tackles, including six for loss and a quarterback sack. He also intercepted a pass.
His 13 tackles were the second highest for a Maroon Tiger this season, trailing only the 17 tackles made by Derrick Scott against Albany State.
This was the fourth time this season and the third time in a row that Cargile collected tackles in double figures. The Morehouse single-game record for tackles is 23, set by James Bullard, in 1962 against Clark Atlanta, then called Clark College.
The Morehouse 2007 season leader in tackles, Cargile was also named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The only other Maroon Tiger to be named Player of the Week by the online site was John David Washington in 2005, when he rushed for 234 yards and four touchdowns against Edward Waters College.
