October 27, 2007 – ALBANY, GA – The game started badly for the Maroon Tigers and went down hill from there. And by the time the final horn sounded, Morehouse had lost 49-35 to the Albany State Golden Rams at their Homecoming celebration.
Morehouse was never in the game, after failing to field the opening kickoff and allowing the Golden Rams to recover the ball on the one-yard line. Two plays later and Albany State had a lead they never relinquished.
The Maroon Tigers almost got back in the game when Christian Green returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the Albany State two-yard line, but the defense held and Morehouse settled for a 30-yard Micah Streiff field goal.
Two minutes later, ASU running back Demetrius Johnson scored the second of his three touchdowns, on a 14-yard run up the middle. ASU scored three more touchdowns and allowed two by Morehouse and took a 35-16 lead at halftime.
The game was won primarily in the trenches, where the Albany State linemen on both sides of the ball outweighed the Morehouse linemen by an average of 50 pounds. The clear size differential allowed the Golden Rams to dominate nearly every aspect of the game.
Morehouse fell to 6-3 (3-3 SIAC). Albany State improved to 7-2 (5-1 SIAC).
Because of the early deficit and an ineffective ground game, Morehouse abandoned the run and was forced to pass on almost every down. Six rushers gained a total of six yards, one of the lowest in Morehouse history.
Quarterback Christian Sterling completed 17-of-33 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. He was sacked three times and intercepted twice.
Carlos King, returning to his hometown for the final time as a Maroon Tiger, caught two passes – both touchdowns – of 69 and 46 yards.
James Steadman caught six passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
Free safety Derrick Scott led all tacklers with 17. Earl Thomas collected 11 and Jeffrey Cargile had 10.
Morehouse will play the final home game of the season, Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. against the Miles College Golden Bears.
