September 15, 2007 – DURHAM, NC – Wide receiver Achille Hendje caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Christian Sterling with just over a minute left in the game to lift Morehouse to a 13-12 come-from-behind victory over Shaw University.
Trailing 12-6 and facing almost certain defeat, the Maroon Tigers drove the ball 65 yards for the score in less than three minutes. Most of the yardage came on passes by Sterling to Hendje and receiver James Steadman.
Sterling, a sophomore from Houston, had replaced starter Carlos King who suffered an ankle injury. Despite being sacked three times, including once for a safety with 5:22 left in the fourth quarter, Sterling completed 6-of-14 passes for 73 yards and the winning touchdown.
Shaw blew a chance to win with nine seconds left, when a 40-yard field goal attempt by kicker Ryne Powell fell short and the Maroon Tigers and their fans celebrated wildly. Powell had hit a 43-yarder early in the third quarter.
The late-game heroics ended a defensive struggle between the two teams who managed only an exchange of field goals through the first three-and-half quarters.
Morehouse got outstanding defense from a variety of players, including Jeffrey Cargile, Gabriel Harper, Earl Thomas and Jamal James, who led the way with seven tackles and a sack.
Derrin Nettles, DeJuan Payne, Eric Shelton and Randall Ward also recorded sacks and kept Shaw out of the end zone most of the game.
The only scoring in the first half was a Micah Streiff field goal from 25 yards that gave the Maroon Tigers a 3-0 lead. Streiff also connected on a 40-yard field goal late in the third quarter and hit the point-after-touchdown that gave Morehouse the one-point win.
Shaw’s only touchdown came when a tired Morehouse defense let running back Alan Atwater slip around the right end for a 28-yard TD run.
The win was the second straight on the road and third of the season for the Maroon Tigers, who equaled their win total of last year.
The Maroon Tigers will travel to Selma, AL., on Saturday, to face Concordia College at 5 p.m.
