September 8, 2007 – JACKSON, TN – Kelvin Moore scored a one-yard touchdown with less than three minutes left in the game, as the Maroon Tigers upset the Lane College Dragons 14-7 to win the season’s first road game.
A lackluster game, televised by ESPNU, turned into a war in the fourth quarter when the teams came to life and all the points were scored.
Trailing 7-6 and on the verge of a second straight fourth-quarter collapse, Morehouse pulled the game out with a spectacular offensive drive. And the defense held on for the win.
The winning touchdown was set up by a 56-yard pass reception by Carlos King to Myericks Thompson.
Facing third-and-20, King connected with Thompson who circled out of the backfield, caught the pass over the middle, broke a tackle and sprinted 35 yards to the one yard line. After the one-yard plunge by Moore, King connected again with Thompson for the two-point conversion.
King had his best game ever, constantly scrambling out of trouble for positive yardage or hitting receivers on the run. The senior from Albany, Ga. completed 13-of-34 passes for 244 yards and rushed for 113 yards on 17 carries.
Wide receiver James Steadman got the Maroon Tigers on the board first, hauling in a King pass and outrunning the defenders into the end zone for a 54-yard touchdown. Steadman caught two other passes to finish with 69 yards.
Terrence Thomas caught three passes for 58 yards, including a 31-yarder late in the second half that kept a drive alive.
Free safety Derrick Scott recorded five tackles and led a balanced Morehouse defense, which stifled a high-powered Lane offense that two weeks ago put up 54 points against Lincoln University.
Defensive back Jeffrey Cargile kept constant pressure on Lane quarterback Sherrod Ellis. He picked off a first-quarter Ellis pass on the 18 yard line to stall a Lane drive.
Morehouse will play Shaw University Saturday in Durham, NC.
