
August, 25, 2007 – ATLANTA – Opening Day was good for the Maroon Tigers who won 23-14 over Benedict College at B.T. Harvey Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, the teams traded touchdowns for the rest of the game. Morehouse got on the board first, midway through the second quarter, when running back Kelvin Moore danced into the end zone from the 13-yard line.
Moore turned in a yeoman-like performance, carrying the ball 27 times for 106 yards. He also grabbed two passes in a full day of work and helped the Maroon Tigers keep the chains moving.
Quarterback Carlos King hit 18-of-35 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns to lead Morehouse to the fourth straight win over Benedict.
The senior from Albany, Ga. took only one sack and threw no interceptions.
A fired up Maroon Tiger defense forced four turnovers from their conference rivals from Columbia, SC and held the visiting Tigers to 307 total yards.
Eric Shelton (8 tackles), Troy Shine and Jeffrey Cargile (7 tackles each) led the Morehouse defense that kept the Benedict offense off balance all game. The defense recorded three sacks, three interceptions and 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage to hold four Benedict rushers to 178 yards.
Achille Hendje hauled in five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown and James Steadman pulled down six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Besides the defense, a bright spot in the season opener was the kicking of newcomer Micah Streiff. The Decatur native who transferred from Tennessee State punted nine times for a 45.2 yard average. Six of his punts pinned Benedict inside the 20-yard line. Streiff also kicked a 36-yard field goal and 2-of-3 extra points.
Morehouse will host Fort Valley State next Saturday at 7 p.m. Fort Valley beat Clark Atlanta 13-10 at home.
