September 25, 2006 – ATLANTA – Four Maroon Tigers were named SIAC Players of the Week for their performances in Saturday’s 17-13 win over Condordia College. POW honors are determined by Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference officials at the end of each week.
Quarterback Ruben DuPree earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for hitting 17-of-24 passes for 269 yards and directing a 17-point, second-half comeback against Concordia.
DuPree, a senior from Atlanta could easily have won the same honor last week, when he passed for a Morehouse single-game passing yardage record of 445 yards and three touchdowns. But the SIAC has a long-standing policy that a player on a losing team can not be offense player of the week. Morehouse lost that game to Kentucky State 34-31.
Defensive back Derrick Scott won Defensive Player of the Week honors for his outstanding play in the Morehouse secondary, which held Concordia to 150 passing yards. Scott, a junior from Bronwood, GA, recorded nine tackles and one-and-a-half sacks. (A half sack is recorded when two players arrive at the opposing quarterback at the same time.)
Freshman place kicker Muhammed Abdur-Rahman received the Co-Newcomer of the Week honor. Abdur-Rahman, hit 2-of-2 points-after-touchdown and kicked a 21-yard field goal, which turned out to be the margin of victory in the close game. He shared the newcomer award with Curtis Johnson of Clark Atlanta.
Center Ross Thompson earned Offensive Lineman of the Week honors for superlative play anchoring a Morehouse offensive line that gained 301 yards and scored on 3-of-3 chances in the Red Zone. The senior from Houston, TX received a grade of 90 percent from his coaches and recorded three “pancakes,” defined as putting a defensive player on the ground.
