TIGERS BEAT CONCORDIA, BREAK LOSING STREAK

September 23, 2006 – ATLANTA – Kelvin Moore came off the injured list to score two touchdowns and help Morehouse break a three-game losing streak, as the Maroon Tigers beat Concordia College-Selma 17-13.

After trailing 7-0 at halftime, the Maroon Tigers punched in two touchdowns in the third and added a field goal in the fourth. The second half scoring continues the 2006 pattern of slow starts and fast finishes. Morehouse has outscored opponents 88-61 in the second half through five games.

Morehouse improved to (2-3 (1-3 SIAC), despite being out-gained overall in yardage 345-301. The Concordia Hornets fell to 1-4.

Moore, a 6’-2” 195-pound running back, scored on a 1-yard run and a 4-yard run in the third quarter, when the Maroon Tigers broke the game open. The junior from Columbus, GA had been nursing a hamstring injury and was not expected to play. After having shoulder surgery in the off-season, Moore has played sparingly, including filling in as the punter in two games. He rushed for 47 yards and caught four passes for 61 yards.

Ruben DuPree who has been given the starting job at quarterback followed up his record-breaking game last week with another outstanding game. The senior signal caller from Atlanta completed 17-of-24 passes for 269 yards, despite being sacked five times and nearly sacked many more.

Last week, in his first start this season, DuPree threw for 445 yards, breaking the previous single-game passing yardage record of 335 yards set by Duwuan Burton in 2003. More important than the record, DuPree has shown the ability to excel under pressure and inspire the Maroon Tigers to second-half comebacks.

Speaking of comebacks Muhammed Abdur-Rahman has played his way into a groove after a shaky early season start. The freshman place kicker hit a 21-yard field goal and two extra point attempts, for a perfect day at the office.

Jeremy Major has emerged as one of the Maroon Tigers’ most potent weapons. Missing much of last season, because of injury, the speedy wide receiver and kick returner is the Morehouse all-purpose yardage leader.

Major caught five passes for 140 yards and returned two kickoffs for 59 yards.

Scorpio Brown, Robert Harris and Derrick Scott combined for 27 tackles and applied heavy pressure on the Concordia quarterback and pass receivers. Brown combined with Scott for a sack and tackled two runners behind the line of scrimmage. Scott had a solo sack and two-and-a-half tackles for loss.
Charles Prescott collected the third Morehouse sack.

Morehouse will travel to Los Angeles next week to play the Alcorn State Braves in the Silver Dollar Classic. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (PDT) in the Memorial Coliseum.
