October 22, 2005 – ATLANTA – Wide receiver Raymond Johnson caught six passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 27-21 double overtime loss to Clark Atlanta at Homecoming.
Johnson’s three touchdowns give him 12 for the season and vault him into first place for the Morehouse single-season record for touchdown receptions. The senior from Lithia Springs, GA surpassed three former players tied with 10 TD receptions.
The game was a study in contrasts, as Morehouse out-gained CAU through the air, 250-78; while CAU out-gained Morehouse 355-113 on the ground.
Morehouse played catch-up all game and tied the score on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ruben DuPree to Raymond Johnson with 1:13 left in regulation.
In the first overtime period Morehouse defensive back Woodrow Vereen blocked a Brandon Larkin field goal attempt to thwart a Panther drive. The Maroon Tigers had a chance to win in their half of the alternating possession overtime format, but an interception by CAU’s Derrick White in the end zone halted the scoring attempt.
In the second overtime period, CAU’s Terrin Usher ran it in from the one-yard line, to put the Panthers ahead. When the Maroon Tigers got the ball, John David Washington was stopped short on fourth-and-four from the 19-yard line.
After a scoreless first quarter, Clark Atlanta scored twice in the second quarter and held on for a 14-0 halftime lead. Morehouse struck back midway through the third period on a 71-yard touchdown reception by Raymond Johnson. The teams exchanged touchdowns early in the fourth quarter, before Johnson’s last-minute TD catch sent the game into overtime.
Running back John David Washington rushed for 105 yards on 25 carries. Washington’s sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season puts him over 1,000 yards for the second time in his career.
Morehouse quarterback Ruben DuPree was kept on the run almost the entire game and was sacked four times and threw two interceptions. He completed 12-of-30 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Adrian Johnson led the Clark Atlanta attack with 166 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He also passed for a touchdown.
The first loss to CAU since 1999 drops Morehouse to 3-5 (2-5 SIAC); Clark Atlanta improves to 3-6 (3-4 SIAC).
Morehouse will travel to Albany State on Saturday to face the Golden Rams; Clark Atlanta will play Tuskegee.
