October 15, 2005 – JACKSON, TN – In what can only be described as an offensive slugfest, the Maroon Tigers outlasted the Dragons, 52-37, to dampen the Lane College Homecoming celebration.
The two teams combined for 1,112 yards of offense. Ironically, Lane out-gained Morehouse 557 yards to 535 yards. The 52 points surpass the 50 scored earlier this season against Edward Waters College and is the highest offensive output since Morehouse beat Hampton 51-13, in 1970.
Quarterback Ruben DuPree took advantage of his first career start, by hitting 16-of-23 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. The junior from Atlanta who has been a backup for three years picked up where he left off last week. In the 34-24 loss to Tuskegee, DuPree relieved starting quarterback Carlos King and orchestrated a 24-point fourth-quarter scoring barrage.
Running back John David Washington had another career day, rushing for 171 yards and three touchdowns.
Wide receiver Raymond Johnson had a spectacular game, catching eight passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Several of his catches were leaping grabs over two or three defenders.
Kicker Adam Williams hit 4-of-5 extra points and kicked a 20 yard field goal. His booming punts and kickoffs kept the Dragons on their heels and deep in their own territory.
Sherman Benton, Woodrow Vereen and Gerik Witt each had six tackles to lead the Maroon Tigers on defense. Four key defensive starters – Scorpio Brown, Robert Harris, Jimmy Lane and William McKnight – sat out the game with injuries. All are expected to return by next week.
Morehouse moves to 3-4 (2-4 SIAC); Lane drops to 0-7 (0-6 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers will play Clark Atlanta for a Homecoming match-up on Saturday at B.T. Harvey Stadium at 2 p.m. Morehouse has won the last six games against the cross-campus Panthers. CAU is coming off of a 45-12 loss to Albany State.
