MAROON TIGERS TALLY 35-YEAR HIGH

Corey Russ 2.jpg

September 17, 2005 – Valdosta, GA – Scoring early and often, the Maroon Tigers got back on the winning track, with a 50-28 thrashing of Edward Waters College, in the inaugural Harvey Moore Azalea City Classic.

The EWC Tigers were no match for a determined Maroon Tigers team looking to avenge a 27-20 loss to the Jacksonville-based team last season at B. T. Harvey Stadium.

The Maroon Tigers scored by air and by land, putting up the highest number by a Morehouse team since the 51-13 drubbing of Hampton University in 1970.

Three Maroon Tigers had career days.

Running back John David Washington rushed for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Cornerback Johnny Eubanks collected four interceptions. And wide receiver Corey Russ returned a 94-yard kickoff for a touchdown.

Washington’s rushing yardage was the second highest rushing total in Morehouse history. The junior from Toluca Lake, CA holds the Morehouse single-game rushing record, with 242 yards he ran against Johnson C. Smith University in 2003.

Washington leads the SIAC in rushing with 563 yards. He is ranked 12th in the nation in rushing.

Eubanks’ four interceptions in one game are a new Morehouse record. He surpassed three other Maroon Tigers tied with three apiece.

Russ’ kickoff scoring return was the third highest in school history. The record is held by Radcliff Quarterman who ran one back 96 yards against Kentucky State in 1996.

Washington and Eubanks were named the SIAC and the NCAA Division II Players of the Week.

Kicker Adam Williams got an Honorable Mention for his standout game. As a punter, he had four punts for a 43.2 yard average, and as a place kicker, he hit 3-of-4 points-after-touchdowns and kicked a 39-yard field goal. With a 41.7- yards-per-punt average, Williams is the 14th ranked punter in the nation.

On offense, Morehouse compiled 481 yards, the highest total this season. After four games, the Maroon Tigers are the 20th ranked rushing offense in the D-II nation.

Wide receiver Raymond Johnson had four receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown and running back Eddie Rowe gained 68 yards rushing. Rowe’s 23-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter put Morehouse ahead to stay.

Morehouse bounced back from a 35-14 loss at Stillman last week and improves to 2-2 (1-2 SIAC). Edward Waters dropped to 0-3 (0-1 SEAC).

The Maroon Tigers play the Thorobreds of Kentucky State Saturday at home at 7 p.m.
