September 3, 2005 – ATLANTA – After an exciting, season-opening win over Benedict last weekend, the Maroon Tigers suffered their first loss of the season to the Fort Valley State University Wildcats, 24-17, in overtime.
Two interceptions and a lost fumble undid the Maroon Tigers who out-gained the Wildcats by 103 yards.
Maroon Tigers special teams surrendered 107 yards on kickoff returns, including an 87-yard run back by Fort Valley’s Rashod Moulton at the start of the third quarter that led to a touchdown.
Morehouse wide receiver Raymond Johnson scored two touchdowns on passes of 11 and 14 yards. The junior, from Lithia Springs, GA, had five catches for 68 yards. Wide receiver Corey Russ had two catches for 87 yards.
Adam Williams was perfect on the day as a place kicker, hitting two extra points and a 33-yard field goal. Adams was superb as a punter, booting five balls for an average of 43.2 yards per kick, and twice pinned the Wildcats inside the 20-yard line.
Morehouse running back John David Washington rushed for 169 yards on 25 carries.
The loss was a far cry from the 57-12 mauling at the hands of the Wildcats last year in Macon and drops Morehouse to 1-1 (1-1 SIAC). Fort Valley improved to 1-1 (1-0 SIAC).
Morehouse will play Stillman College Saturday in Tuscaloosa, AL, at 6 p.m. CDT.
