October 30, 2004 – ATLANTA – The game was close until halftime, but three touchdowns in the third quarter and two in the fourth quarter propelled the Albany State University Golden Rams to a 50-15 defeat of the Maroon Tigers.
Morehouse could muster only 210 yards of offense – 124 passing, 86 rushing – against a bigger, faster Albany State team that is ranked number one in the SIAC and number five nationwide in Division II.
The Golden Rams rolled up 511 yards of total offense against the Maroon Tigers, who got a heavy dose of Antwaun Andrews, one of the SIAC’s leading rushers. Andrews gained 158 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns.
Freshman running back Byron Comer led the Tigers with 52 yards rushing on eight carries. John David Washington collected 27 yards on nine carries.
Starting quarterback Duwuan Burton connected on 10-of-24 passing attempts for 115 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted three times. Burton added a one-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a quarterback sneak.
Burton’s longest reception was a 49-yard touchdown pass to Raymond Johnson. The junior wide receiver’s caught a short pass in the left flat and scored after breaking several tackles. Johnson’s catch and run provided one of the few bright spots for the mostly partisan, standing-room-only Homecoming crowd of more than 14,000.
Woodrow Vereen (14 tackles), Robert Harris (13 tackles) and Lynn Freeman (11 tackles) led the Tigers on defense. Harris also had an interception that he returned for 24 yards.
The loss dropped the Maroon Tigers to 4-5 (3-4 SIAC). Albany State moved to 9-0. With an 8-0 conference record, the Golden Rams captured their second consecutive SIAC crown.
Morehouse will square off against the Golden Bears of Miles College, Saturday, in Birmingham. That game, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. has been changed to 2 p.m.
