October 9, 2004 – COLUMBUS, GA – The Maroon Tigers suffered their worst loss of the season, Saturday, at the 69th Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic, in Columbus, GA.
The game started badly and only got worse for the Maroon Tigers who lost 56-8 to their longest running rivals. Tuskegee scored early and often and by the end of the first quarter, Morehouse trailed 21-0, to the Golden Tigers who scored on every possession.
Morehouse never gained much yardage or momentum. Despite trying nearly every available combination of quarterbacks and running backs, the Maroon Tigers could muster only 104 yards of total offense against one of the best defenses in the conference.
Tuskegee, on the other hand, used three quarterbacks and 10 different running backs to amass 550 total yards of offense – 242 on the ground and 308 through the air.
Kevin Huff, the Tuskegee starting quarterback and the game’s MVP, connected on 16-of-23 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns. He also gained 67 yards on the ground and scored two rushing touchdowns.
Morehouse backup quarterback Carlos King was the team’s leading rusher with 15 yards gained on one rushing attempt. That gain was the Maroon Tigers’ only rushing first down. Starting quarterback Duwuan Burton hit on 9-of-17 passing attempts for 56 yards and was sacked three times.
The only bright spot for the Maroon Tigers came midway through the fourth quarter, when two freshmen combined for a 68-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Defensive lineman Richie Jones scooped up a Tuskegee fumble and after advancing it for 20 yards pitched it off to defensive back Johnny Eubanks who ran it in for a touchdown.
Sophomore defensive back Robert Harris, making a rare offensive appearance, ran the ball in for the two-point conversion. Harris was the leading Morehouse defender with 12 tackles.
Morehouse dropped to 2-4 (1-3 SIAC). Tuskegee improved to 4-1 (2-1 SIAC). The Maroon Tigers will face Lane at B.T. Harvey Stadium Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
