November 4, 2006 – MEMPHIS, TN – Proving they can run with the best teams in the region, the Flying Maroon Tigers finished seventh in the NCAA Division II – South Region Cross Country Championship.
After winning the thirteenth consecutive SIAC cross country championship two weeks ago, the Morehouse team made a strong showing in the regional competition against 20 of the top teams in the Southeast.
Harding University, of Searcy, AK, won the 10-kilometer regional meet, with five runners finishing in the top nine positions. Florida Southern University finished second and West Florida University took third.
Morehouse tallied 204 points, only seven points behind sixth-place Columbus State University and 46 points ahead of eighth-place Florida Gulf Coast University.
Senior Alex Brickler led the way for Morehouse, finishing fifteenth overall. The remainder of the team finished in almost the exact order they ran in almost every meet – Julius Hanks, Yafet Abraha, Dezmond Douglas, Joshua Sams, Ross McMillan and Kevin Chase.
The most prominent variation in the Morehouse order was the emergence of Joshua Sams. The junior from St. Louis, who competed sparingly this season, finished fifth among Maroon Tigers.
Congratulations to head coach Willie H. Hill and the Flying Maroon Tigers who will now turn their attention to indoor track and field, with six meets scheduled for the upcoming season.
