MOREHOUSE RACES TO 12TH STRAIGHT SIAC TITLE

October 20, 2006 – ATLANTA – The 2006 Flying Maroon Tigers cross country team did what was predicted before the season began and captured its 12th consecutive SIAC title with a convincing show of team balance, grit and determination.

Picked to win the title by Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches, Morehouse showed true to form. The victory was a total team effort for Morehouse and broke the season-long pattern of 1-2 finishes by Alex Brickler and Julius Hanks.

Morehouse won with 26 points over second-place Benedict College, with 75 points, and Fort Valley State with 87 points.

For the first time in recent memory, no Morehouse runner finished first in the championship, but as a team, the Maroon Tigers grabbed seven of the top 12 positions and ran away with the crown.

Instead, Ross McMillan saved his best cross country performance for his senior year, crossing the finish line third overall and first among Morehouse runners. McMillan, a middle-distance track star from Tallahassee, FL, covered the 8K course in 28:11.65.

Junior Yafet Abraha, who normally finishes in the third spot for Morehouse, crossed the line second for Morehouse and fourth overall, just eight seconds behind McMillan.

Alex Brickler crossed the line third for Morehouse and fifth overall.
Brickler, who dominated nearly every conference race this year, was the 2005 SIAC Most Valuable Runner. The senior from Tallahassee was twice named SIAC Runner of the Week in 2006.

Dezmond Douglas, a freshman from North Ridgeville, OH, took fifth for Morehouse and seventh overall.

Junior Julius Hanks finished fifth for Morehouse and ninth overall. Hanks was named the SIAC Runner of the Week for the week of September 30.

Senior Kevin Chase and freshman De’Andre Cherry brought up the rear for the Maroon Tigers, finishing eleventh and twelfth overall and demonstrating the outstanding depth and balance of the Morehouse team.

Morehouse coach Willie H. Hill was named the 2006 SIAC Coach of the Year for the 12th consecutive year.

With four of the top seven Morehouse runners expected to return next season, the Maroon Tigers will be odds-on favorites to repeat yet again.
