MAROON TIGERS LOSE SQUEAKER IN COLUMBIA

February 4, 2010 – COLUMBIA, SC – The Maroon Tigers rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit and four Maroon Tigers scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to win, as Morehouse lost 74-73, to the Benedict Tigers.

After a brief, three-point, lead midway through the first half, Morehouse fell behind 49-42 at the half and was forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.

Including a 40-31 rebounding advantage, the Maroon Tigers prevailed in almost every stat, except the final score. By percentage, Morehouse out-shot Benedict from the field, (44-41), from the free-throw line (72-68), and from the three-point line (67-46).

But as in Tuesday’s Morehouse loss against Fort Valley, three-pointer volume was the difference in the game. Benedict hit 11-of-24 three-pointers, compared to 6-of-9 for the Maroon Tigers.

Team scoring leader Jelani Figures scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, to help fuel the comeback. Figures, last week’s SIAC Player of the Week, also pulled down five rebounds and dished out five assists.

Shawn Allen and Joshiah Anabraba recorded double-doubles, in the second road loss of the week, which dropped Morehouse to 5-12.

Allen, a freshman from New Orleans, hit 3-of-3 shots from beyond the arc and sank two free throws, for 11 points. His 11 rebounds were a game-high.

Anabraba, playing in only his fifth game of the season, scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards.

Marcus Wedge, starting for the first time this season, chipped in nine points and four rebounds.

Rod Williams had a perfect shooting night, hitting all five of his shots from the field and three shots from the charity stripe.

Four Benedict players scored in double figures, to push the Tigers to 10-7.

The Maroon Tigers take on the Panther, of Claflin, Saturday, at 3 p.m., at Forbes Arena.
