January 9, 2010 – Birmingham, AL – The Maroon Tigers enjoyed their first taste of victory this season, with a, 59-44, win over the Miles College Golden Bears.
On the way to snapping a six-game losing streak, Morehouse led wire-to-wire and avenged a 20-point loss to Miles, on December 5, at Forbes Arena. Each team has won only one game and that win came against each other. Morehouse improved to 1-6 (1-4 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers out-rebounded the Golden Bears 44-41 and won the battle under the basket, on the strength of a 34-12 points-in-the-paint advantage.
Appearing in only his second game, this season, Jelani Figures again led Morehouse with 15 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Since his return, the junior from Mobile, AL has added veteran leadership and point production, to the Morehouse team comprised mostly of freshmen.
Playing before a hometown audience, Keon Blackledge a freshman from nearby Hoover, AL chipped in 12 points and four rebounds.
Rod Williams, the Morehouse leading scorer and rebounder, scored six points, hauled in nine rebounds and blocked four shots.
Shawn Allen had a big game, with nine points and five rebounds. Carrington Carter contributed six points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Richard Harper’s 15 points paced the Golden Bears who fell to 1-10 (1-7 SIAC).
Morehouse will travel to Memphis, to take on the Magicians of LeMoyne Owen, Monday at 7:30 p.m.
