February 28, 2009 – ATLANTA – The Maroon Tigers finished the regular season on a high note, winning, 91-83, over the Kentucky State Thorobreds.
Morehouse was firmly in control and rarely threatened by the feisty but undersized Thorobreds. A double-digit lead near the game’s end allowed the seniors who were playing their last home game to give way to underclassmen hoping for court time.
In keeping with a tradition he established as head coach, Grady L. Brewer presented each of five seniors with a framed jersey, at a midcourt ceremony at halftime. The players' parents received a bouquet of roses.
The Morehouse fans also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of six cheerleaders participating in their last home game.
Four seniors – and a sophomore – scored in double figures, to give the Maroon Tigers the most balanced scoring this season.
Morehouse improved to 9-18 (7-17 SIAC).
Senior Kenney Boyd led all scorers with 25 points. The senior center hit almost every shot he threw up, and went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Senior Larry Diamond added 18 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Senior Jerry Felder hit 5-of-6 shots and three free throws, for 13 points, to go with his team-high seven rebounds.
Senior Travis Floyd scored 10 points and handed out six assist.
Jelani Figures made all of his shots, to chip in 10 points. He pulled down six rebounds and collected three steals.
The Thorobreds, who fell to 8-19 (7-17 SIAC), also got balanced scoring. Four players recorded double figures, led by Harrison Brown with 19 point.
Morehouse will travel to Birmingham, for the SIAC tournament, which begins Wednesday. When all games are concluded, the tournament bracket will be posted on the web at – www.siacbasketballtournament.com.
