February 7, 2009 – ORANGEBURG, SC – The Maroon Tigers gave the Claflin University Panthers all they could handle for 59:59.7, but a questionable foul call with .3 seconds left led to two Claflin free throws and a Morehouse defeat, 67-65.
Travis Floyd hit a fall-away three-pointer with nine second remaining to tie the game at 65-all. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Maroon Tigers had the Panthers defended well, until a foul call against Kenney Boyd sent Eric Salley to the free throw line. Salley, who scored a game-high 19 points, sank both freebies for the margin of victory.
Floyd’s shot was the culmination of a furious Morehouse comeback that erased a 10-point lead by the SIAC’s second-ranked team. The senior guard from Atlanta came off the bench, to finish with 15 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, including a trio of treys. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.
Morehouse outshot Claflin from the floor – 52 percent to 37 percent – and from the free-throw line – 71 percent to 69 percent – and kept the game close throughout, only to have the game decided by a call that left the other two officials looking bewildered.
One key to the game is that Claflin threw up 30 three-pointers, hitting 10, and Morehouse shot 11 from beyond the arc, hitting five. It was the second loss against the Panthers who beat the Tigers 61-49 on December 4, at Forbes Arena.
Center Kenney Boyd hit 7-of-9 shots and 4-of-5 free throws for a team-high 18 points, to go with six rebounds and four assists. The All-SIAC center hit a variety of shots from inside and out.
Larry Diamond scored 11 points and hauled in four rebounds and J.P. Felder threw in nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
Morehouse fell to 5-14 (3-13 SIAC).
Two other Panthers scored in double figures, to help Claflin advance to 18-2 (17-2 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers will travel to Fort Valley, to tangle with the Wildcats, Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m. Morehouse defeated Fort Valley, 88-84, at Forbes Arena, on Tuesday.
