January 10, 2009 – ATLANTA – For the second time in five weeks, the Maroon Tigers lost a close game to Miles College. Today’s 67-63 loss to the Golden Bears follows an 82-81 defeat to the Birmingham, AL school, on December 6.
Statistically, the game, which featured 14 ties and four lead changes, could hardly have been closer. Rebounds, points-off-turnovers, bench-points, assists and shooting percentages were nearly identical.
The most glaring difference was the five missed free throws by the Maroon Tigers, in the final two minutes, which could have changed the outcome.
Three Maroon Tigers scored in double figures, led by Larry Diamond who scored 20 points, on 7-of-15 shooting and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
J.P. Felder contributed 14 points and five rebounds and Jelani Figures threw in 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Morehouse, again without the service of center Kenney Boyd, got strong games from recently-added guard Paul Williams and backup center Joshiah Anabraba. Williams chipped in eight points and a team-high seven assists and Anabraba scored five points and hauled in seven rebounds.
Three Golden Bears scored in double figures, led by SIAC leading scorer Flawaan Flaggs, who recorded a game-high 23 points.
Morehouse slid to 3-5 (1-4 SIAC), while Miles improved to 5-6 (5-3 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers will face the Magicians of Lemoyne-Owen College, Monday, at 7:30 p.m. at Forbes Arena.
