December 2, 2008 – TUSCALOOSA, AL – Larry Diamond hit eight free throws in the game’s final minutes and helped Morehouse hold on for an 81-77 win over the Stillman College Tigers.
Diamond, a senior from Atlanta, sank 10-of-10 free throws and 8-of-12 shots from the field, to lead all scorers with 26 points. He also pulled down six rebounds and handed out three assists.
Morehouse led most of the way through the first half and took a 43-33 lead into the locker room.
Stillman came out firing in the second half, outscoring the Maroon Tigers 21-10 early in the period. The home Tigers surged to an eight-point lead, before the Maroon and White pulled it together and won the first conference game of the season.
As accurate as Diamond was from the free-throw line Stillman was the opposite. Stillman players shot only 11-of-27 free throws. Many of the misses came down the stretch and would have tied the game or given them the lead.
Morehouse improved to 3-1, while Stillman fell to 1-3.
Center Kenney Boyd recorded a double-double, with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The senior from Meridian, MS hit 5-of-8 shots from the field, 4-of-5 free throws and blocked three shots.
J.P. Felder nearly had a double-double, hitting 6-of-6 shots and a free throw, for 13 points, while pulling down nine.
Jelani Figures led all players with four steals, to go with nine points and four rebounds.
Three Stillman Tigers scored in double figures, led by Marquell Jones who threw in 21 points.
Morehouse will play its first home game of the season, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against the SIAC-leading Panthers of Claflin University. Morehouse was one of only two teams to beat Claflin last year. The Orangeburg, SC school, which went 28-2 last season, is a newcomer to the NCAA and joins the SIAC this season.
