February 7, 2008 – COLUMBIA, SC – Morehouse endured its worst loss of the season, an 82-57 defeat by the conference-leading Benedict Tigers.
After the first five minutes, Morehouse was never in the game. The Maroon Tigers trailed by 24 points at halftime and by 35 points with five minutes remaining. The team shot a season-low 34.4 percent from the field and was out-rebounded 46-28.
Morehouse has now lost five straight games, the longest losing streak in more than 20 years. The road record stands at 2-9.
Even with center Kenney Boyd back in the Morehouse lineup, it wasn’t enough to avoid the 25-point loss. Boyd the team’s top rebounder and second leading scorer sat out Tuesday’s loss at Fort Valley with a stomach virus. The 6’-8” junior scored 11 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds, in only 12 minutes of action.
Morehouse scoring leader Jason Reese, who played for all 40 minutes, made 7-of-19 shots, for 15 points, to go with five rebounds.
Travis Floyd tallied 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Freshman Jelani Figures recorded his highest point total as a Maroon Tiger. The 6’-5” guard from Mobile, Al hit 2-of-3 shots from the field and 4-of-4 free throws for nine points.
Five Benedict Tigers scored in double figures, led by Charles Gibbs who hit 6-of-8 shots for 16 points. Benedict improved to 15-5 (12-2 SIAC).
Morehouse dropped to 10-10 (7-8 SIAC).
The Maroon Tigers have a chance to finish the season strong. The final six games of the season will be at Forbes Arena, where they are 8-1. Morehouse will play the Fort Valley State Wildcats, Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m.
