MAROON TIGERS STUMBLE IN FORT VALLEY

February 5, 2008 – Fort Valley, GA – Morehouse dropped its fourth straight game, losing to the Fort Valley State Wildcats, 72-69.

The loss drops Morehouse to 10-9 (7-8 SIAC) overall and 2-8 on the road. Fort Valley improved to 7-12 (6-8 SIAC).

Travis Floyd got the Maroon Tigers off to a good start, hitting three three-pointers, but Morehouse turned the ball over 11 times in the first half and the Wildcats turned those miscues into a 34-29 halftime lead.

The second half was a see-saw affair with multiple ties and lead changes. Morehouse built a 10-point lead with 4:30 to go, but turnovers, fouls and missed free throws conspired against the visiting Maroon and White.

As with other Morehouse losses, the game came down to poor free-throw shooting. The Maroon Tigers missed two free throws in the final two minutes that almost certainly affected the outcome. Instead, the Wildcats hit their free throws down the stretch, to put the game away.

Morehouse was without starting center Kenney Boyd who stayed at home with a stomach virus.

Jason Reese hit 10-of-18 shots from the field, to lead all players with 25 points. The team captain sat out only one of the game’s 40 minutes and pulled down four rebounds, handed out three assists and had two steals.

Travis Floyd hit 6-of-11 shots, including four three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. The junior point guard from Atlanta who leads the SIAC in assists had a game-high six assists.

Roderick Williams led the Maroon Tigers in rebounds with eight boards. Filling in for the absent Boyd, the freshman forward got the start and chipped in five points in 21 minutes of action.

Marlon Ferguson, the high-leaping forward who has played in only four games this season, also had a solid game, filling in for Boyd. Ferguson contributed 11 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Three Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Martrez Scott, who scored 16 points and Darrell Aiken who tallied 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Morehouse will travel to Columbia, SC, to face the conference-leading Benedict Tigers, Thursday, at 7:30 p.m.
