January 31, 2008 – ATLANTA – Morehouse blew a 21-point lead with under 12 minutes remaining and lost to Clark Atlanta, 60-58.
The loss was the Maroon Tigers’ first this season at Forbes Arena and the first loss against the cross campus Panthers in three years.
After building a 33-20 halftime lead, the Maroon Tigers appeared to be on cruise control against the 7-8 Panthers. But midway through the second half, the engine slipped into reverse for the Maroon and White, who were outscored 34-12 in the final 12 minutes.
The game was a study in contrasts. Morehouse out-rebounded Clark Atlanta 45-27. CAU hit 80 percent from the free-throw line; Morehouse hit 46 percent. Half of the more than 5,000 fans went home happy; half went home stunned.
One of the few Morehouse bright spots was the play of Kenney Boyd, who recorded his ninth triple-double of the season. Boyd, hit 5-of-12 shots for 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, despite extensive bench time in the second half. Before fouling out with 3:13 remaining, the junior center committed a third of the Maroon Tigers’ 21 turnovers.
Brenden Stoner was the only other Maroon Tiger in double figures. Stoner went 4-of-14 from the field and finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Morehouse scoring leader Jason Reese had his lowest output of the season. His six points was only the second time this season the junior swingman has failed to score in double figures.
Three Panthers scored in double figures. Ale Burt and Najee Lane scored 13 points each and Garry Beverly tallied 10 points.
Morehouse, which fell to 10-7 (7-6 SIAC), will face Clark Atlanta again on February 16, at 4 p.m.
The Maroon Tigers will play the Golden Rams of Albany State, Saturday at 7:30 p.m., in Albany, GA.
