January 24, 2008 – TUSCALOOSA, AL – Marcus Wedge and Paul Williams came off the bench to help Morehouse shake off the road-loss blues and beat the Stillman Tigers 80-73.
Four Maroon Tigers scored in double figures and Morehouse led wire-to-wire, handing Stillman its twelfth loss of the season. The win snapped a three-game road skid. Morehouse improved to 10-5 (7-4 SIAC).
Wedge, a 6’-3” guard from Landover, MD, averages six minutes per game. Most of his minutes have come late in games, when coach Grady Brewer needed outside shooting. But when called on early today, the freshman guard maximized his 21 minutes, with his best game as a Maroon Tiger. He scored eight points, pulled down four rebounds and handed out a game-high five assists.
Williams, a 5’-9” junior from Atlanta, scored his Morehouse career high of 12 points, on 5-of-7 shooting. Usually the first man off the bench, Williams logged 28 minutes – nearly double his average. He hit two three pointers and chipped in three rebounds and three assists.
The Maroon Tigers, who shoot the lowest number of three-pointers in the conference, jacked up 21 from behind the arc, hitting nine.
Jason Reese hit 9-of-12 free throws and tallied a game-high 19 points, to go with five rebounds. The team captain and inspirational leader hit the first of two three-pointers a minute into the game and jump started the Morehouse offensive attack.
Center Kenney Boyd, last week’s SIAC Player of the Week, recorded his seventh double-double of the season. The SIAC’s most accurate shooter hit 7-of-7 shots from the field, to finish with 15 points. Boyd’s game-high 10 boards led Morehouse to a 36-24 rebounding advantage over the host Tigers.
Brenden Stoner rebounded from two straight scoreless and lackluster games, to score 14 points and grab five rebounds.
Three Stillman Tigers scored in double figures – Marquell Jones and Brandon Ward had 18 points each, and Randy Layman-Henry scored 10 – but it wasn’t enough to help the Tigers record their second win of the season.
The Maroon Tigers continue on the road, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., to square off against the 3-9 Golden Tigers of Tuskegee, who lost 83-56 to Clark Atlanta at home.
