January 17, 2008 – ATLANTA – Morehouse knocked off the Kentucky State Thorobreds, 68-60, and snapped a two-game losing streak, to remain unbeaten at home.
The Maroon Tigers built what should have been a comfortable lead for most of the game then tried to give it all back at the end. In the final five minutes, turnovers and missed shots allowed a 16-4 Thorobred scoring run that nearly erased a 15-point lead. But the Tigers regained their composure and pulled out their seventh straight win at Forbes Arena.
The Morehouse win returned the favor of an eight-point loss to the Thorobreds, on New Year’s Day in Frankfort. Morehouse moved to 8-4 (5-3 SIAC).
Kenney Boyd rebounded from a lackluster performance in the Monday loss at Lemoyne Owen, to play his best overall game of the season. On the way to his fifth double-double of the season, the 6’-8” center from Meridian, MS, hit 11-of-15 shots for a game-high 25 points. His game high 12 rebounds helped Morehouse win the rebounding battle 43-30.
Boyd’s four assists tied for game high honors with teammates Travis Floyd and Jason Reese and his five blocks more than doubled KSU’s output of two.
Reese, the Morehouse scoring leader, recorded his second straight double-double and fifth of the year. The 6’3” senior from Greenville, GA poured in 16 points, on 7-of-14 shooting, and hauled down 10 rebounds, to go with four assists.
Almost as important as his scoring and rebounding, Reese’s energy and senior leadership pushed the Maroon Tigers over the top. His steal and layup at the 1:00 minute mark broke the Morehouse scoring drought and the spirit of the visiting ‘Breds.
Guard Brenden Stoner got into the double-digit scoring column, with 10 points, to go with his six rebounds and three assists.
Morehouse completely shut down the two players who lit them up in Frankfort. Kenny Jones who scored 31 points at home against the Tigers was hampered by early foul trouble and managed only 10 points before fouling out. Elijah Baker who scored 22 in that game, scored only five points today.
Tony Johnson, with 18 points, and Keith Godette, with 14 points, provided the scoring punch for KSU, which fell to 7-6 (6-4 SIAC).
Morehouse will try to keep that home win streak alive against the Lane Dragons, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. at Forbes.
