January 12, 2007 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – Continuing their woes on the road, the Maroon Tigers fell to the Miles Golden Bears 85-76.
Poor free-throw shooting and sloppy ball handling derailed the Maroon Tigers who dropped to 1-3 on the road and 7-3 (4-2 SIAC) overall. Morehouse hit only 12-of-24 free throws and turned the ball over 26 times. Contrast that with the Golden Bears who hit 20-of-28 free throws and committed only 11 turnovers.
Morehouse kept it close throughout, but trailed most of the game, including 46-43 at the half. Down by as many as 10 points in the second half, the Maroon Tigers tied the score at 70-all with six minutes to go, but Miles went on a 12-2 scoring run to put the game out of reach.
Three Maroon Tigers scored in double figures in the losing effort.
Center Kenney Boyd recorded his fourth double-double of the season, with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The 6’-8” junior from Meridian, MS leads the team in that category. Boyd handed out a team-high six assists, but countered that with a game-high six turnovers.
Point guard Travis Floyd and Jason Reese each shot 6-of-11 from the field and finished with 18 points apiece.
The other starters – Jerry Felder chipped in seven points and eight rebounds and Brenden Stoner added eight points and four rebounds.
Miles shooting guard Flawaan Flaggs, scored 32 points, to lead all scorers, followed by teammate Leon McKinney, who threw in 30 points. Miles improved to 6-6 (4-4 SIAC).
From Birmingham, the Maroon Tigers travel to Memphis to face the Magicians of Lemoyne Owen, on Monday at 7:30 p.m. (Central Time). They will return to Forbes Arena on Thursday to play Kentucky State.
