November 17, 2007 – ATLANTA – All five starters scored in double figure, to lead Morehouse to an 80-69 win over the Shaw University Bears, at Forbes Arena.
The “fab five” scored all but four of the team’s 80 points, as Morehouse improved to 2-0. Shaw, which beat Columbus State, last night, fell to 1-1.
The first half was plagued by turnovers and poor shooting and Shaw, which led for most of the first half, took a 28-22 lead into the locker room. The Bears shot 33 percent; the Maroon Tigers shot 23 percent.
Both teams picked it up in the second half. The lead changed hands repeatedly until a steal and layup by point guard Travis Floyd put the Maroon Tigers up for good. A jumper in the lane by forward Jerry Felder and two three-pointers by senior Brenden Stoner gave the Maroon Tigers the breathing room they needed to salt the game away.
From the early going, it was clear that the Maroon Tigers had picked on someone their own size. The Bears matched up much better than Fisk, Morehouse’s opponent from Thursday, whose tallest player was just over six feet.
Morehouse may have gotten a break, when 6’-7” Robert Espinosa, one of Shaw’s top rebounders and scorers, injured his ankle in the game’s first minute and failed to return to action.
Morehouse was almost without one of its big guns, when center Kenney Boyd went to the bench early in the first half with foul trouble. Boyd, who scored 28 points in the 95-59 win over Fisk, scored only two points in the first half.
But unlike Shaw, which had no replacement for its big man, Morehouse had forward Jerry Felder who stepped in with a monster game.
Felder, a 6’-7” 230-pound transfer from Austin Peay University, poured in 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds. He also blocked four shots.
Senior Jason Reese, who scored 19 points Thursday, went one better against the Raleigh visitors, scoring 20 points, to go with five rebounds. Reese hit 8-of-8 free throws and played the crucial moments of the second half, despite picking up his fourth foul midway into the second period.
Junior point guard Travis Floyd hit 11-of-11 free throws and four shots from the field, to score 20 points. He shared game-high scoring honors with Reese and Shaw’s Damola Obadina. Floyd, a transfer from Nashville’s Travecca Nazarene University, led all players with four assists and three steals.
Senior Brenden Stoner joined the double digit scoring party, with 11 points, on 4-of-8 shooting. His two three-pointers helped the Maroon Tigers pull away with just under four minutes left in the game.
When Boyd returned in the second half, he made his presence felt, scoring eight of his 10 points and pulling down six of his eight rebounds, to go with four assists.
The Maroon Tigers hit 26-of-32 free throws. The accuracy was vital near the game’s end, when Shaw was forced to foul to stop the clock and extend the game.
Besides Obadina’s 20 points, Cori Gaither was the only other Shaw player in double figures, with 10.
Morehouse will play the Claflin University Panthers, Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m., at Forbes Arena.
