TIGERS MAUL BULLDOGS IN SEASON OPENER

November 15, 2007 – ATLANTA – Newcomer Kenney Boyd threw down 28 points, to power Morehouse to a convincing, 95-59, win against Division III rival Fisk University, in the season opener.

The 6’-8” 280-pound junior from Meridian, MS simply overpowered his Bulldogs’ defenders, with a variety of layups, jumpers and dunks. Boyd shot 13-of-15, from the field, and hit both of his free throws. His no-look, over-the-shoulder assist to teammate Joseph Hines was one of the game’s best plays. Another was a behind-the-back dribble and dunk on a fast break that left the defender sprawling on his back and brought the Morehouse fans to their feet

From the opening tip, it was clear that the game would be no-contest. Morehouse jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back, against the Nashville visitors, who dressed only 10 players. The Maroon Tigers outscored Fisk in the paint, 64-32, and easily out-rebounded the Bulldogs whose tallest player was 6’-2.”

Jason Reese got his senior season off to a stellar start, shooting 9-of-15 for 19 points. The 6’-3” 190-pound swingman from Greenville, GA tied for the game high in steals and the team-high in rebounds, with five of each.

A runaway victory allowed head coach Grady Brewer to dole out ample playing time and watch his “new-edition” Maroon Tigers in their first real-game action. A total of 11 Maroon Tigers -- two seniors, three juniors and six freshmen – made their debut in a Morehouse uniform. The only returning players who saw action were Reese, Joseph Hines and Paul Williams.

From the stat sheet, it appears Brewer got what he always claims to want – solid defense and high-percentage shooting. Morehouse held Fisk to 40 percent shooting, while hitting nearly 60 percent of its own shots.

Junior point guard Paul Williams hit 3-of-6 shots for eight points, pulled down three rebounds and dished out three assists.

Senior Brandon Stoner played a solid game in his debut as a Maroon Tiger, contributing seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior point guard Travis Floyd had a game-high eight assists, to go with three points and a steal.

Morehouse will face CIAA opponent Shaw University on Saturday in Forbes Arena, at 6 p.m.
