February 28, 2007 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – For the second straight year, Morehouse suffered a first-round defeat in the SIAC tournament. This time, the hometown Miles College Golden Bears showed the Maroon Tigers an early exit with a last-second shot that broke a 72-all tie.
The 74-72 loss dropped Morehouse to 9-16 and concluded the team’s worst season in more than 10 years. Morehouse entered the tournament seeded 10th, also the lowest seed in more than a decade.
Will Belton led Morehouse with 26 points, on 10-of-20 shooting from the field, including three three-pointers and three free throws. Belton’s clutch shooting in the final minutes helped bring the Maroon Tigers back from a nine-point deficit with less than three minutes to play. His three-pointer with 21 seconds left tied the game at 72.
But it was the shot against Belton that won the game for the Golden Bears. With the Morehouse defense spread and the clock winding down, Andrew Jones backed Belton down and hit a 15-foot jumper, with 1.1 seconds left on the clock. Jones, who a day before was named to the SIAC all conference team, led all scorers with 27 points.
Miles, the tournament’s seventh seed, improved to 14-14 and advanced to play Fort Valley State, the second-seeded team, which drew a bye in the 12-team tournament.
