February 1, 2007 – ATLANTA – For the second time this year, the Maroon Tigers have won two games in a row – this one a 69-57 win over the struggling Panther of Clark Atlanta.
Also for the second time, four Maroon Tigers scored in double figures, in a balanced attack that handed the Panthers their seventeenth straight loss (0-17 (0-11 SIAC). The Tigers out-rebounded CAU 69-57 and blocked eight shots, compared to none for the Panthers, and improved to 6-10 (6-8 SIAC).
In the season’s most well attended game – 4,206 – the Maroon Tiger came out smoking against their cross-campus rivals. Knocking down 50 percent of their shots in first half, Morehouse built a 20-point lead and never appeared threatened, despite several Panther rallies.
Shooting guard Will Belton led the Morehouse scoring barrage with a game-high 21 points, to go with six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Belton hit 6-of-10 shots from the field and 7-of-7 free throws.
Center James Beasley recorded his third double-double of the season, making 5-of-11 shots for 11 points, and hauling in 10 rebounds.
Forward Marlon Ferguson repeatedly electrified the Morehouse faithful with high-rising dunks, rebounds and blocked shots. The SIAC’s second-most accurate shooter hit 5-of-6 shots for 10 points.
Stretch, as Ferguson is called, provided one of the game’s most exciting sequences, midway through the second half. The 6’-4” junior blocked a three-point attempt at one of the court and on the ensuing Morehouse possession he caught the ball at the free-throw line, took one giant step and slammed it down, as Morehouse fans leapt to their feet.
Freshman point guard Tilmon Holloway recorded his second best scoring day as a Maroon Tiger, with 10 points, to complete the double-digit scoring. Jason Reese handed out a game high five assists, to go with seven points.
Three Panthers scored in double figures, led by Demetrius Young who threw in 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Morehouse will try to extend the winning streak when Albany State visits Forbes Arena, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m.
