Will Belton came within one rebound of recording his first double-double as a Maroon Tiger, as Morehouse defeated Tuskegee’s Golden Tigers, 78-67, to snap a three-game losing streak.
Belton, the SIAC’s fourth-leading scorer poured in 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, with five three-pointers, and 5-of-5 free throws. The flashy shooting guard pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, to go with two assists and a block.
Trying to find some rhythm and the right combination of players, Morehouse fell behind early in the first half then turned on the jets to grab a 13-point halftime lead.
In the second half, the Maroon Tigers pulled ahead by as many as 24 points and held off the undersized and inexperienced Golden Tigers, to coast to victory.
Every Maroon Tigers who played scored and grabbed a rebound.
Paul Williams threw in eight points and handed out a game-high five assists.
Marlon Ferguson scored 16 points and hauled in seven rebounds. Jason Reese contributed on both ends of the floor, with seven points, six rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists. Lawrence Diamond chipped in eight points, to go with three rebound and two assists. Paul Williams
Morehouse improved to 5-10 (5-8 SIAC); Tuskegee fell to 3-13 (3-8 SIAC).
In the first of their two annual battles, the Maroon Tigers will face cross-campus rival Clark Atlanta on Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. The home game for the CAU Panthers will be played in Forbes Arena. Admission is $10 ($5 for students with ID).
