January 25, 2007 – ATLANTA – Forward Stephon Williams made the most of his first start as a Maroon Tiger, with a standout effort in a losing cause, as Morehouse fell to Stillman 75-71.
The 6’-8” junior from New Haven, CT poured in 14 points, on 7-of-8 shooting; grabbed six rebounds and fueled a furious second-half rally that pulled the Maroon Tigers up from a 13-point halftime deficit to a five-point lead.
For the second straight game, the Maroon Tigers jumped out to an early lead, trailed at halftime, made a second-half rally, only to run out of steam at the end. The comeback was sparked mostly by a full-court press that forced nine Stillman turnovers that led to easy baskets by the Maroon Tigers.
Despite the full-court press, the Stillman Tigers had little trouble scoring, hitting 31-of-61 shots from the field for a 60.8 percent accuracy, the highest by any Morehouse opponent this season.
As he’s done in 10 games this season, Will Belton led Morehouse in scoring. The senior shooting guard hit 6-of-17 shots from the field, including four three-pointers and 4-of-4 free-throws.
Morehouse got solid contributions from Jason Reese – eight points, three rebound and three assists – and Kwame Agbottah – six points, six rebounds and Marlon Ferguson – five points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Guard Paul Williams had a good shooting day, hitting 3-of-5 three-pointers for nine points.
Overall, though, the Maroon Tigers had no answer for Stillman’s Monyea Pratt, who played all 40 minutes. The SIAC leading scoring and rebounder, scored 18 of his 30 points in the second half, and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, to pace the 2006 conference champions. Two other Tigers scored double figures to help Stillman elevate to 9-6 (8-3 SIAC).
With the loss, Morehouse suffers the third three-game losing streak of the season and drops to 4-10 (4-8 SIAC).
Morehouse will square off against Tuskegee on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. at Forbes Arena.
