TIGERS LOSE HOME OPENER

January 2, 2007 – ATLANTA, GA – In a game that was exactly not the way to begin a new year, the Maroon Tigers took one on the chin at the hand of the visiting Thorobreds from Kentucky State.

The 71-54 loss was the worst home opener in years and dropped Morehouse to 1-4 (1-2 SIAC).

Morehouse kept it nearly respectable in the first half and went to the locker room trailing 30-21. Despite shooting only 32 percent, the game seemed within reach. But Kentucky State came out smoking at the start of the second half and never looked back. A 21-point lead midway through the second stanza seemed to take the wind out of the Maroon Tigers’ sails.

Center James Beasley paced Morehouse with 19 points on 9-of-23 shooting and led all players with 12 rebounds.

Morehouse scoring leader William Belton contributed 16 points on 4-of-14 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. No other Tiger scored more than five points.

The Maroon Tigers had no answer for KSU’s Larry Williams who poured in 25 points, on 9-of-17 shooting. Two other Thorobreds scored in double figures, to help Kentucky State improve to 3-3 (1-2 SIAC).

Morehouse will face Lane College, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Forbes Arena.
