December 9, 2006 – FAIRFIELD, AL – The Maroon Tigers shed the O-for -06 monkey with a convincing 81-67 win over the Miles College Golden Bears.
Showing little sign of the cold first half start that has plagued the team so far this season, Morehouse kept it close in the first half and trailed 32-28 at the break, But the Morehouse poured it on in the second half, to beat a Miles team that entered the game at 5-2. The Maroon Tigers outscored the Golden Bears by 18 in the second half, mostly as a result of a 26-13 rebounding advantage.
Morehouse shot a respectable 50.8 percent from the field, compared to 36.7 percent for Miles. Neither team shot well from the free-throw line, with both teams shooting less than 56 percent.
Team scoring leader William Belton poured in a game-high 25 points, on 9-of-15 shooting. Demonstrating his all-around game, Belton recorded four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Morehouse got a huge boost from forward Edward Pollard who contributed 14 points off the bench, to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Pollard scored 10 of his points in the second half, when the Maroon Tigers put the game out of reach. The senior from Houston shot 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line and sparked a 51-14 Morehouse bench scoring advantage.
Newcomer Jason Reese did most of his damage in the second half, on the way to tallying six points and seven rebounds, to go with two assists, three blocks and three steals.
Guard Paul Williams and center James Beasley each scored eight points and Marlon Ferguson chipped in six points and seven rebounds.
Andrew Jones led Miles with 23 points and three rebounds. Two other Golden Bears scored in double figures.
Morehouse 1-3 (1-1 SIAC) will play the season home opener against Kentucky State, Monday January 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Forbes Arena.
