MOREHOUSE TOO TOUGH FOR CLARK ATLANTA

February 18, 2006 -- ATLANTA -- After keeping it close for most of the game, the Maroon Tigers turned up the heat and pulled out an 82-70 victory over Clark Atlanta.

The win gave the Maroon Tigers a season sweep over the cross-campus rivals. Morehouse won part one 87-73, on February 2.

Bouncing back from a loss to Albany State on Thursday, the Maroon Tigers stepped up the defense against CAU, swiping 14 Panther miscues and turning them into 25 points.

Four Maroon Tigers scored in double figures in the game with only half the attendance of the February 2 game that was televised nationally on ESPNU.

Team leaders, Brandon Childs and Jason Patterson, who were benched for lack of effort in Thursday’s loss, were re-inserted into the Morehouse lineup. Though they didn’t start the game, the duo made their presence felt early and often and combined for the play of the game.

Patterson led Morehouse in scoring with 17 points, on 7-of-8 shooting, including two three-pointers. Childs threw in 15 points to go with seven assists, three steals and two blocks.

Midway through the second half, Childs stripped the basketball from Panther guard Kelvin Potts and was headed up court with Potts in hot pursuit. Instead of risking a block or foul by Potts, Childs led the defender left and deftly kissed the ball off the right side of the backboard to an onrushing Jason Patterson who slammed it down with two hands.

The highlight play was an emotional lift that brought Morehouse fans to their feet and jumpstarted the surge to the double-digit margin of victory.

Will Belton chipped in 16 points and collected three each of rebounds, assists and steals. With 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, Belton continued the hot shooting that has kept him atop the conference in free-throw accuracy for two years.

For the second straight game, Edward Pollard came off the bench to score 14 points. The always energetic forward from Houston hit 4-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Kwame Agbottah led the Morehouse defense with three blocks and three steals, to go with six points and five rebounds, in 18 minutes of action. Peter Price scored seven points and led all Maroon Tigers with seven rebounds.

Derrick Allen paced the Panthers with 24 points and Jaquas Dobbs added 10. Clark Atlanta dropped to 3-22 (3-16 SIAC).

Morehouse moved to 14-11 (11-9 SIAC) and will play the final home game of the season on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against LeMoyne Owen. That game is Senior Night and will feature the final home game for high-scoring guard Brandon Childs.
The Maroon Tigers beat the Clark Atlanta Panthers in game two of their annual wars on the basketball battlefield. Morehouse had won part one on February 2.
