FLAT TIGERS LOSE TO WILDCATS

February 7, 2006 – FORT VALLEY, Ga. – One day after a valiant second-half comeback lifted the Maroon Tigers’ to victory, the team went flat, and the complete reversal of fortune became a 76-70 loss to Fort Valley.

Playing back-to-back road game, Morehouse beat the 10-7 Albany State Golden Rams, on Monday, then turns around the next day and loses to the 9-10 Wildcats.

It was the first time Morehouse has lost to Fort Valley since a 107-100 double overtime loss in the opening round of the 2001 SIAC tournament.

Few things went right against the Wildcats and the letdown night snapped a three-game winning streak. Morehouse fell to 12-9 (9-7 SIAC). Fort Valley improved to 10-10 (7-8 SIAC).

Four Maroon Tigers scored in double figures, but the team shot only 44 percent in the second half and turned the ball over at critical moments. Free-throw shooting, which carried Morehouse to victory the night before, went equally flat, The Maroon Tigers shot only 8-of-16 from the line.

The loss overshadowed a superb performance by Will Belton who hit 7-of-8 shots, including two clutch three-pointers and finished with 16 points, seven assists and three steals.

Brandon Childs topped the Tigers in scoring with 18 points, but the team co-captain missed a couple of critical free-throws down the stretch, hitting only 2-of-6 from the charity stripe. Jason Patterson scored 12 points and James Beasley contributed 11.

Ray Northern did most of the damage for the Wildcats, scoring 27 points. Desmond Williams back him up with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Kenneth Saunders chipped in 11 points.

Morehouse will travel to Columbia, SC, Thursday, to play the Benedict Tigers who are undefeated in the conference.
