February 6, 2006 – AL ANY, Ga. – For the second time in five days, Brandon Childs matched his career high to lead Morehouse to a come-from-behind win over Albany State.
Trailing by as many as 13 in the first half and looking sluggish and out of sync, the Maroon Tigers clawed back to a 65-61 road win.
Childs threw in 31 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. Most of his points came on dribble drives through the lane that resulted in three-point plays. The season guard and team co-captain poured in 31 points against Clark Atlanta on Thursday in a game televised nationally by ESPNU.
As demonstrated lately, the Maroon Tigers have become a second half team. After a lackluster first half and trailing 30-22, Morehouse went on a tear, playing tough defense and hitting 12-of-19 shots for a blistering 63.2 percent.
“Sometimes you have to get punched in the nose before you come out and fight,” said assistant coach Doug Augusta, after the fierce comeback.
Bolstered by Childs’ 13-of-16 shooting from the free-throw line, the Maroon Tigers shot a season-high 82 percent from the charity stripe, most of them also in the second half.
Jason Patterson scored 10 and Peter Price added nine.
To compensate for being out-rebounded 40-23, the Maroon Tigers forced 22 turnovers and made each possession count.
Kwame Agbottah had four points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal, but that steal was one of the keys to the game, coming with 10 seconds left in the game and the Golden Rams driving to tie the score.
Travon McGruder led ASU with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Scheraun King and Frank Pinson score 11 points apiece.
The win against the SIAC regular-season champions improved the Morehouse record to 12-8 (9-6 SIAC). The Golden Rams dropped to 10-8 (9-5 SIAC).
Morehouse, winners of the last 6-of-8, will remain on the road and play Fort Valley Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and conference-leading Benedict Thursday in Columbia, SC.
