January 21, 2006 – ATLANTA – Payback was the word for the Lane College Dragons who downed the Maroon Tigers 68-67. The narrow victory avenged a 67-66 win by Morehouse in the Dragons’ den on January 5.
In a game decided mostly by outside shooting, three-pointers made the difference. Morehouse hit 6-of-20; Lane hit 10-of-27.
Close from start to finish, the game went down to a final three-point shot, but the 18-foot jumper by Will Belton rimmed out at the buzzer.
The loss to the defending SIAC champions snaps a two-game win streak for the Maroon Tigers who hit the road for the next five of six games.
The lone home game in that stretch will be the clash with Clark Atlanta that will be televised on ESPNU on February 2.
Brandon Childs led Morehouse with 20 points, on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. The team’s leading scorer also recorded six rebounds six assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Belton, the team’s second-leading scorer, didn’t warm up until the second half, when he scored his nine points on three-pointers down the stretch.
Peter Price (12 pts.) and Jason Patterson (10 pts) picked up most of the scoring slack for Morehouse.
Khalid Shabazz had a team-high 10 rebounds and scored six points en route to his best outing of the season. The 6’-6” forward from Atlanta’s West Lake High School has been making the most of his playing time, filling in Edward Pollard, one of the top reserves. Pollard is out for medical reasons and listed as day-to-day.
Lane’s Adrian Comer torched the Tigers for game-high in points (25) and rebounds (11). Rayco Currie and Leroy Douglas combined for 30 points and eight steals. Lane, which had beaten Clark Atlanta on Thursday, upped its record to 9-6 (7-4 SIAC).
Morehouse, who defeated Kentucky State on Thursday, slid to 9-7 (6-5 SIAC). On Tuesday, the Maroon Tigers travel to Augusta to face Paine.
