December 10, 2005 – ATLANTA – Forward Jason Patterson had his best game in two years to help the Maroon Tigers whip the Golden Bears of Miles College, 81-71, at Forbes Arena.
The 6-4 junior, from Lithonia, Ga., sat out last year as a medical red-shirt. He played sparingly this season after suffering a broken nose in practice and needed to wear a face mask. In his breakout game, Patterson recorded 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot. He also had a game-high four steals.
Five Maroon Tigers scored in double figures, in the game that wasn’t as close as the score suggests. Morehouse led by as many as 18 points with four minutes left in the game.
Morehouse guard Will Belton led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including three three-pointers, and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Forward Kwame Agbottah, the 2005 SIAC Freshman of the Year, pulled down eight rebounds for the Maroon Tigers to tie for the team lead with Josiah Young. Young also threw in 12 points to go with three assists and a blocked shot.
Forward Edward Pollard came off the bench to contribute 10 points and four rebounds.
Brandon Childs, Morehouse’s season scoring leader (14.5 ppg) collected 13 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. He led all players with five assists.
Gamal Kemp (20 pts.) Lance Tippett (19 pts.) and Adrian Woods (10 pts.) paced the Golden Bears who dropped to 1-7 (1-3 SIAC).
After a short holiday break, the Maroon Tigers will play in a holiday basketball tournament in Los Angeles, Ca. Dec. 27-29. Promoted by Morehouse alumnus Dr. Joel A. Ward ’73, the tournament will feature eight HBCU teams in a round-robin format played at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. The event will include an outdoor carnival, a national collegiate step show, a celebrity basketball game, halftime shows and more than 200 exhibits.
