Cougars Shoot Down Tigers

Josiah Young vs CSU.jpg

November 26, 2005 – CARROLLTON, Ga. – Four Maroon Tigers scored in double figures, but the defense failed to stop the hot-shooting Columbus State Cougars who won 82-73, in day two of the All-Georgia Classic.

Josiah Young turned in another strong performance, pouring in 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The junior transfer from Silver Spring, Md. played 39 minutes and recorded his second double-figure scoring in two days. Young, who scored 13 of his points in the first half, helped Morehouse take a 36-33 halftime lead.

The game, which featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes, remained close until the 7:32 mark of the second half, when Columbus State went on a three-point shooting spree. Antoine Ransom hit two consecutive three-pointers to break a 59-59 tie and two other Cougars hit back-to-back threes to outscore the Maroon Tigers 14-3 in just over three minutes.

The Maroon Tigers battled back with a three-pointer barrage of their own – two by Will Belton and one by Brandon Childs – but it was too little too late. When the Maroon Tigers were forced to foul to stop the clock, the Cougars made them pay, hitting 20-of-26 free throws in the second half.

Childs led Morehouse with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds. Belton tallied 15 points and center James Beasley threw in 12.

Four Cougars scored in double figures, led by Justin Wilson who had a game-high 20 points.

In yesterday's action, Morehouse lost to Georgia College and State University 83-67 and Columbus State beat West Georgia 82-74.

Columbus State, which plays in the Peach Belt, improved their record to 5-1.

Morehouse drops to 1-2 and will play SIAC rival Tuskegee on December 1, at 7:30 p.m. at home in Forbes Arena.
