Morehouse College has carved a distinctive niche in American education for over a century, producing leaders who excel regardless of their career path. An important factor in our graduates' success is our strong commitment to the liberal arts.
The Division of Humanities & Social Sciences, our largest academic division, defines the liberal arts experience at Morehouse. This program offers challenging curricula and aims to prepare students for their next step in life, whether it is graduate study or a professional career.

Students in this program may pursue a B.A. in African-American studies, art, drama, education, English, French, health and physical education, history, international studies, music, philosophy, political science, religion, sociology, Spanish or urban studies.

Minors are available in African-American studies, criminal justice, English, French, history, music, philosophy, political science, religion, sociology, Spanish and urban studies.

Department of African American Studies

The African-American Studies major is holistic (multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary) and serves as an undergraduate foundation for students who wish to pursue graduate work in history, art, economics, English, government affairs, international studies, journalism, music, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, cinema, mass communications, and drama/theater.

Department of English

The English Department is passionately devoted to properly educating the Morehouse student. Specifically, the department’s goals focus squarely upon building more than the command of language. We encourage an abiding appreciation for literature on humanistic levels.

Department of Kinesiology, Sports Studies and Physical Education

The aims and objectives of the Department of Health and Physical Education are to recruit, teach, and develop teaching, research, administrative, and sports coaching personnel in health and physical education, related health, and paramedical areas. It also emphasizes the development of desirable leadership and citizenship traits.

Department of History

The Department of History's aims, goals, and objectives are determined by the general mission and objectives of Morehouse College, one of the nation's premier educational institution and the only one dedicated primarily to the education and nurturing of black men.

International Studies and Urban Studies

Department of Modern Foreign Languages
Consistent with the mission of Morehouse College, the Department recognizes the need for language proficiency in today's changing world. We are dedicated to providing instruction, activities, counseling and guidance, which enhance the humanities disciplines.

Department of Music

The Department of Music is committed to providing the most productive educational experiences for its students who wish to study music as one of the liberal arts. Fostering the development of artistic talent, humanitarian ideals and sensitivities, academic acumen, and respect for the highest professional standards is the principal aim of the Department.

Department of Philosophy & Religion

The courses in philosophy and religion seek to provide the student not only with a firm base in these two academic disciplines, but also with a means for self-examination and self-orientation.

Department of Political Science

The goal of the department is to prepare students for entry-level professional employment in public agencies at all levels--international, national, state, and local. The department's primary strategic objective is to increase the number of its students who attend and graduate from professional and graduate schools.

Department of Sociology

Sociology prepares students for graduate and professional study in a variety of disciplines and establishes a foundation for entry into a diversity of professional fields.
