About the Program
The Chinese Studies Program offers Chinese language courses from elementary to advanced levels, as well as Chinese culture, literature and film courses taught in English. As a leading Chinese program in the Historically Black College and University community, the Morehouse Chinese Studies Program is outstanding for its academic curriculum and study abroad opportunities. Among the top 20 HBCU colleges and universities, only five schools offer Chinese language courses, and Morehouse College is unique for having its own, departmental-level Chinese Studies Program. The curriculum of the Program develops students’ proficiency in the Chinese language and provides a deeper understanding of contemporary and historical issues related to China, as well as expert resources in Chinese studies. The Program offers both summer immersion and semester study abroad opportunities in China and Taiwan, and organizes student and scholar exchange activities with counterparts from Chinese institutions. Through these opportunities, the Program prepares Morehouse students to participate in global competition and promotes the internationalization of Morehouse education.
The Chinese Studies Program is a featured participant in the 100,000 Strong initiative of the U.S. State Department to increase the number and diversify the composition of American students studying in China. In addition, the Program has received financial support from companies such as Coca Cola, Walmart, and Deloitte LLP in the past. Currently the Program offers the Chinese minor, with the goal to offer the Chinese major in the near future.
