A Salute to Champions
A LETTER FROM PRESIDENT FRANKLIN
It is a quiet Sunday morning. Standing near the back door of King Chapel, I look at our 9,000 seat B.T. Harvey Stadium with admiration. The birds are playing in the bleachers while a gentle breeze lifts empty cups and rolls them along the ground. Last night, something remarkable happened in this place.
Our first game last week against Benedict was a great win. In fact, the game ball is still on my desk and will be joined by many others. But last night (September 1st), we witnessed something just as impressive. The game against Fort Valley State was a battle of titans. With only seconds left after four tough quarters, Fort Valley State won by a point. In my mind, that game doesn't go into our “Loss” column. It wasn't a win for us - but it was a victory. Our Tigers played like champions and conducted themselves like men of Morehouse: strong scholar-athletes who kept their eyes on the bigger picture - the entire season - not just one game. Once again, we saw the gridiron serve as a laboratory where character is made and tested.
All of this is a testament to Coach Rich Freeman and the renaissance of Morehouse football that he and his entire coaching staff, trainers and supporters are leading. A loss hurts, but I could not be prouder of these men of Morehouse.
I saw another group of champions that night, also. After the final score, a few opposing fans engaged in taunting. I thank Morehouse and Spelman fans, cheerleaders, the band, and our security team for keeping everything in order. Again, Morehouse, you proved that you are the real champions.
So, rest your head this night and every night knowing that all the departed saints of Morehouse past are smiling proudly upon you.
And, I am a grateful president.
President Robert Michael Franklin ‘75
