Dr. Robert M. Franklin '75 to be Guest Panelist During Essence's '08 Empowerment Series

Essence Festival 2008

President Robert M. Franklin ’75 spoke about ways to address America’s educational issues during a panel discussion at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on July 5.

As part of the festival’s Empowerment Seminar Series, Franklin participated in a panel discussion entitled “Taking Back Our Communities and Classrooms – Finding Solutions,” with U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Jabali Sawicki, principal of The Excellence Charter School in Brooklyn, N.Y. The discussion was moderated by CNN correspondent Soledad O’Brien.

The series aims to empower the audience with knowledge for the soul. Under the theme of “Reclaiming the Dream,” the seminars addressed issues that directly affect African American communities. This year, the discussion focused on spirituality, health, families, relationships, finances and the upcoming presidential election.

Essence magazine partnered with CNN to present the seminars.

President Robert Franklin ’75 and Ron Thomas, director of the Journalism and Sports Program, were introduced to members of the press at a reception during the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention and Career Fair in Las Vegas in August. The reception was co-sponsored by Morehouse, the Georgia Power Company and Southern Company.
